Happy Earth Day, Enjoy The Ride!
Earth Day was founded on April 22, 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a US Senator, to bring environmental issues to the national agenda with the intent of reducing pollution in the air, water and land. Twenty million Americans demonstrated across the U.S. on that first Earth Day which led Congress to authorized the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and a host of laws focused on protecting the environment.
47 years later, Earth Day is organized collectively in 193 countries across the globe and emphasizes the importance of clean air, water and land. Scientific measurement and simple everyday observations are telling us our growing population is consuming more of our planet, deteriorating our natural resources and changing our environment.
Imagine if on the first Earth Day our planet was a brand new vehicle. The ride was smooth, reliable, loaded with the latest technology available and capable of comfortably chauffeuring 3.7 billion passengers. Today, 47 years later, it carries 7.5 billion passengers. How reliable would that vehicle be if we didn’t take preventative measures to maintain it?
If you find it hard to imagine Earth as a vehicle, take a look at a NASA picture from Mercury in our own solar system. It is visibly clear we are traveling on a tiny subcompact vehicle.
Earth Day is the one day around the world where we the passengers collectively think about taking care of our ride. It is our hope for you that this Earth Day helps you identify easy decisions you can make that can have a huge impact on preserving our natural resources.
